Antikythera honored their patron saint, Saint Myron

This year the memory of Saint Myronos Martyr Myronos was celebrated on the small island of Antikythera, where he is the Patron Saint and Protector.

This year's celebration did not include the traditional Cretan feast because of the koronoios, while the solemn Divine Liturgy was celebrated (for the first time) in the Church of St. Charalambos Potamos, as the Church and the monastic buildings of St. Myronos are under radical renovation at the expense of Mr. Athanasios Martinos.

In the evening (16/8), the Great Pan-Holy Vespers was celebrated in the open-air area in front of the source of the Agiaσματος of Saint Myronos, where his Holy Icon was found by the Cretans in the 16th century. (?) and then, with devotion and reverence, the Holy Icon and his Holy Relic were litigated in procession to the settlement of Potamos (4.5 km) preceded by the Archbishop of Kythera and Antikythera, Mr. Seraphim.

On the day of the feast 17/8 the Panhyriki Archiepiscopal Mass was celebrated. Mass was celebrated at the Church of St. Charalambos followed by a procession through the picturesque alleys and the harbour of the coastal village. The Mayor of Kythera and Antikythera Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis and the President of the Community of Antikythera Mr. Georgios Harhalakis as well as a small delegation of Cretan pilgrims, who by custom attend the celebration of the Saint, were present.

The first cantors Mr. Ioannis Tsounis and Mr. Nikolaos Taprantzis sang melodiously.

His Eminence made special reference to the great project of the renovation of the Church and the Monastery buildings of St. Myronos in Antikythera, a project that is already underway since October 2020 with the expenses and sponsorship of the noble Mr. Athanasios Martinos, Political Administrator of Mount Athos. He stressed the great importance of this project for the island and the lasting blessing that Saint Myron provides to Antikythera and its inhabitants. During the works, an engraved inscription was discovered that identifies with the inauguration of the Monastery and reads «1693 October 4», creating new historical data for a period unknown for the island in the existing literature. As the research of the architectural structure to date shows, this is a fortress-like monastery of the Venetian period, which is associated with an important wave of refugees from Crete to the Ionian Islands after the long siege of Chandakas (Heraklion) (1648-1669) and the subsequent occupation of Crete by the Ottomans.

His Eminence prayed a prayer for our fire-stricken, earthquake-stricken and flood-stricken brothers and sisters, while he prayed especially for the solution of the perennial drought that plagues our islands. Finally, he wished that next year's celebration would be held with splendour in the renovated Monastery of the Saint.
