Al. Tsipras.

«Is this a prime minister's attitude or are you just irresponsible?». Alexis Tsipras launched a fierce attack on Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the floor of the Parliament

An irresponsible prime minister, with a lack of awareness of the responsibilities and mistakes that have been made, he called the Kyriakos Mitsotakis the leader of the Official Opposition, Alexis Tsipras, speaking to Parliament for the government's failures in the pandemic of coronavirus.

You are satisfied «on the wreckage», he said, addressing the Prime Minister, criticising the fact that he refuses to admit the failures of his government.

«Is this the attitude of a responsible prime minister or are you just irresponsible?» Alexis Tsipras adding that Mr Mitsotakis behaved in the most contemptuous way to the doctors and nurses involved in the battle of the pandemic.

In fact, he did not omit to refer also to the issue of the removal of the patent status of vaccines which he had raised publicly, an issue on which Mr Mitsotakis said earlier that it lacks seriousness and is a firework. «You were quick to discredit the proposal I put forward for a pan-European initiative to ensure that the EU secures patents for vaccines,» he said to point out: «You are so untrustworthy that you denounced a proposal put forward by the distinguished Professor Mosialos, but which you yourself last April had publicly defended.».

In support of his proposal, Alexis Tsipras said that the EU has provided large amounts of funding for the research needed to develop the vaccines by private companies, so it has both the right and the obligation to make more dynamic moves. Today, he said, there are already at least 19 vaccine production plants in Europe that could make a decisive contribution to increasing vaccine production if the patent were secured.

He went on to say that this initiative already has the support of MEPs from the Left, the Greens and the Socialists and we will continue to fight to get as much support as possible. «No, Mr Mitsotakis, we are not asking you to nationalise Pfizer.», he added in response to a relevant Prime Ministerial comment.

Alexis Tsipras said that the country is paying for the responsibilities of a «careless Prime Minister» and an «unprincipled government» that is far from the needs and anxieties of every Greek family, every worker, every shopkeeper, every young man and woman. He stressed that the government's responsibilities are not only serious but «criminal» and commented that does not mean to move away from the trap of self-satisfaction into which all those in power have fallen.

At the beginning of his intervention the President of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance He reported: «I will try not to allow the justified anger I feel as a citizen today to influence the tone of my criticism.» He commented that for the Mitsotakis government “there are responsibilities of everyone else except the government” and stressed that the worst thing that can happen to a prime minister is to be locked in a fishbowl and not be able to correct mistakes because he believes that he is doing everything right.

He then asked a series of questions calling on Mr Mitsotakis to respond mainly with actions rather than words. Questions on the strengthening of the NHS, on basic measures for public transport, on the structures that house thousands of people, on police persecution of citizens and young people and on mass free tests for the whole population.

«The country is 2.5 months in a general lockdown and in those months we lost 4,500 of our fellow citizens. Tens of thousands of people mourn their father, mother, grandmother, grandfather, relative! It's shocking,» Alexis Tsipras said, commenting. that instead of doing everything to protect human life and the health of citizens, the government, to shield the national health care system, he resorts to misplaced and gruesome statistical comparisons to tell us that we are doing well.».

At another point in his intervention, the leader of the opposition mentioned the Prime Minister's refusal to hold a meeting of political leaders with the participation of members of the committee of experts, commenting that the Prime Minister replied that such a council is «an initiative behind closed doors». «Do you really, Mr Mitsotakis, make your decisions behind open doors?» he asked, accusing the prime minister of disregarded in many cases the opinion of experts and, in addition, that he takes decisions with closed ears and closed eyes.

In relation to the vaccination of the population, said that there are unbelievable irregularities, ranging from the number of doses, the time of their receipt and where people are vaccinated. «Unfortunately, the country had the misfortune of having public health managed by its ideological and political opponents in the midst of a pandemic,» Alexis Tsipras said, noting that «your creed is private health, private insurance, speculation on life and health.».

He went on to say that it is case study that one of the greatest historical achievements of science can be left unused in its entirety when it falls into the hands of an incompetent government. «If only half the energy you spent on propagandizing that with the vaccine alone we will soon be rid of the virus would be spent on organizing a serious and credible plan to vaccinate the population,» he said, predicting that the targets set by the government for vaccinations by March «are unrealistic.» Therefore, it is at the very least hubris to celebrate the meagre number of daily vaccinations on top of that,» he said, lambasting the prime minister's statement that «whoever is in a hurry stumbles.».

In relation to the issues of the economy, the leader of the opposition called on the Prime Minister to take care of the people of the real economy «who have been left at the mercy»:

  • By converting the entire repayable advance into a non-repayable advance
  • With a comprehensive regulation of private debt along the lines of the regulation made by the SYRIZA government in the social security funds for entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises and the self-employed, which provided for 120 instalments and partial cancellation of the basic debt
  • Establishment of insurance contribution coverage to maintain jobs and working relationships for the period after the Lockdown is lifted.
  • Repeal of the bankruptcy law.
