The film takes as its starting point the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 and explores the main causes of the phenomenon of mass murder in America and the nature of the armed violence in the United States. The film attracted Moore's international attention as an up-and-coming director and won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary, a special prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, and the Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film.
