The launch of a new cultural initiative in Karavas, Kythira, has been officially announced. It is an informal group of citizens called the «CENTER FOR TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY ART,» which aims to serve as a meeting point between cultural heritage and contemporary artistic creation.
Goals and Actions
The main goal of the initiative is to promote and preserve local traditions, with a particular focus on teaching the art of ferbolite lace-making. This is a significant effort, as the «sister» municipality of Karava in Cyprus has already had this technique inscribed on the UNESCO list as an element of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The new Center will strive to keep this art form alive in Kythira.
The Center will serve as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, workshops, educational programs, and cultural, religious, and social events, catering to all ages.
According to the press release, the initiative is based on the principles of cooperation, transparency, and unity, and it states that it is ready to collaborate with the Municipality of Kythira and any other organization that promotes culture. There is no financial obligation for members to register or pay an annual membership fee.
Information for Interested Parties
The coordinating team, represented by Ms. Eleni Antonopoulou Kalotaridou, invites all interested parties to participate. The initiative’s meetings will be held every Thursday at the Karava Elementary School, from 5 to 8 p.m.
