U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew on Wednesday, January 21, his threat to impose tariffs on European countries over their stance on the issue of Greenland, announcing that he had agreed to the outline of a deal with NATO regarding the future of the vast Arctic island.
«Following a very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we established the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and, essentially, the entire Arctic region,» Trump stated in a post on Truth Social. The U.S. president added that if the agreement is reached, it will be a solution that is «excellent for the U.S. and for all NATO member states.».
Consequently, Trump announced that he was withdrawing the threat to impose tariffs, which had been scheduled to take effect on February 1.
