PASOK filed an objection of unconstitutionality against the amendment for the monument to the Unknown Soldier at the Plenary Session of the Parliament.
«But there are also a number of issues arising from this amendment, which are coming before us and which require not only political analysis but also constitutional analysis,» PASOK parliamentary representative Pavlos Christides said in Parliament.
He wondered why no government official has come forward to present the amendment, which he attributed to an attempt by the prime minister «to ensure that there will never be another defeat of New Democracy, such as the one that came from a moral and reasonable request by Father Rouchi».
«It is obvious that all of us over time have absolute respect for the monument to the Unknown Soldier and even in the most difficult moments of the last 15 years, no Greek has proceeded to desecrate this monument,» the PASOK MP said.
According to the amendment, the use or occupation of the area for any purpose other than visiting the Monument and highlighting its importance is prohibited, as well as any alteration of the area.
The responsibility for the custody and protection of the Monument remains with the Ministry of Citizen Protection, while its care, promotion and maintenance is transferred to the Ministry of National Defence.
At the same time, the alteration of the area and any public gathering is prohibited. Violators will be punished with a prison sentence of up to one year or a fine.
