Houses for teachers in Kythera exist

Are you a teacher? Find out where to look for housing

The issue of Teacher Shortage at the Junior High School and High School of Kythira It has caused turmoil in the local community, but instead of focusing on the essence of the problem—that is, the immediate filling of vacancies – we ended up talking about «solutions» which probably go well with other seasons. The culmination of the mishandling of this issue was the false rumor that teachers coming to the island would be housed in… monastery cells, 25 kilometers away from their schools. This proposal was not merely absurd; it was an insult to the island itself.

In Kythira, There are houses for teachers. The housing problem is not as dire as it is portrayed by certain circles. Property owners on the island are willing to provide housing for teachers in need, with some even offering very favorable rates to support the operation of the schools. Creating the impression that the only solution is to live in monastery cells—a solution that would deter anyone from agreeing to work on the island—is unjustifiable.

One wonders whether those who proposed this «solution» have realized what it means for a teacher to work far from home, to leave his family behind and try to find a place that offers him a modicum of comfort and peace. And yet, instead of seeking realistic and immediate housing solutions, the following are proposed ideas that evoke other decades, if not centuries.

The local community of Kythira has proven that it is able and willing to provide what is necessary to accommodate teachers with dignity. The housing problem is not insurmountable – What is missing is effective management and the will to provide meaningful solutions. It is unthinkable to have a public debate about monasteries when there are so many homes available.

Let's leave behind these outdated and offensive proposals and focus on the real solution: the immediate filling of vacant teaching positions in schools under conditions that will encourage—rather than discourage—teachers to come to and stay in Kythira. After all, decent housing isn't a luxury—it's fundamental right.
