Let's travel at the speed of a speedboat 45 years ago. Back then, when, after lengthy, continuous and complex negotiations of the Caravitis Evangelos X. Tzortzopoulos with the ship-owning company CERES HELLENIC, the Flying Dolphins entered the line on a trial basis in the summer of 1979. In 1980 they started daily from 1 April to 31 October - a 4 1/2 hour route from Piraeus (Zea Marina) with stops in Hydra / Spetses / Porto Heli / Monemvasia / Kythera.
Of course, as always, there were strong reactions and defamation from part of the Kythera society, resulting in the first two years of travel with very few brave passengers!!!! But the prospects were great. A 7 month season for our island was becoming a reality! The tourist was travelling from one island to another - island hopping. Isn't that what we wanted? Tourism, daily schedules and fast ferries!!! And we have had it for 23 consecutive years !
H then? Unfortunately there was no follow-up...
A report in memory of my visionary husband, Evangelos, who passed away on 23 February 2003 - the days when, coincidentally, the Flying Dolphins finally stopped their route to Kythera.
Eleni Tzortzopoulou
