The programme of the theatre:
«The Slaughterhouse of Love»
by Pantelis Boukala
directed by Thodoris Gonis
After the great success and the warm acceptance by the audience and critics, the performance «The Slaughterhouse of Love», returns for the 2nd year for a limited number of performances, from 7 October at the Contemporary Theatre. It is a play based on «Blood of Love» by Pantelis Boukala, directed by Thodoris Gonis and with an excellent leading cast of actors of the younger generation.
«Blood flows abundantly and unstoppable in the territory of love, as it is described in demotic poetry, from the parallels to the erotic song itself’, notes Pantelis Boukalas in his study of demotic poetry.
In this gallery of murders, which until recently would have been described in news headlines as «crimes of passion», most of them have women as victims. Some challenged the dominance of the male master, some asserted rights and autonomy, and others didn't even think about all that, but found themselves in the path of a «bad moment».
Starting from these narratives of tradition, we flip through essays from the last century on gender relations and create a soundtrack of contemporary love songs written by today's men. And where Menousis meets John Lennon and they hum «I didn't mean to hurt you, I'm just a jealous guy» together, we attempt to grasp the thread of a unified narrative, a way of thinking that is alive in the here and now. Our ambition is to present the tutorial of the ages, where all of us as diligent students attended, and prepared ourselves to take on our roles on the stage of gender conflict as both perpetrators and victims.

2os time
The director Konstantina Nicolaides and the theatre production company A PRIORI presented last season at the Contemporary Theatre the swan song of Ivan Turgenev (Clara Milic) in national first. The performance «Between two worlds», a hymn to Love and Love, caused a sensation both to the theatregoers of Athens and to non-theatregoers and to spectators of all ages. The performance, which received excellent reviews and the admiration of the audience, continues for 2η year from Tuesday 18 October every Tuesday and Wednesday.
This latest work by the great Russian writer is a love story based on a true event. «Dancing Plague / Dancing Plague»

text & direction by Konstantinos Markellou
The theatrical surprise of May, which was presented at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus - Omega Stage and impressed with its caustic humour and subversive mood, returns from the end of October, renewed and in a new theatrical home, at Contemporary Theatre in Gazi.
The director Konstantinos Markellos, after the -based on a true story- «The Abduction of Tasoula» (Melina Mercouri 2020 Award Nomination for Eleni Stergiou), sets up an explosive performance with Brechtian references, thunderous rhythms and ironic-playful language that - on the occasion of one of the great unsolved mysteries of history, the medieval Dancing Plague of Strasbourg of 1518; it allegorically cautions the evils of today. With a well-tuned ensemble of actors who, with a willingness to subvert the “theatrical illusion”, alternate roles, prose, play musical instruments and sing live on stage, composing sparring episodes. .
The second play by Konstantinos Markellos is staged by the author with original music by Lefteris Veniadis. The play speaks - with pretentious naivety - about the limits and inadequacies of human nature, the fear of death, the inevitable deterioration of bodies and ideologies, the instinctive reaction of man to oppression, manipulation and poverty, illuminating the conflict between the desire for freedom and the necessity of “belonging”.

«Transformation»

by Franz Kafka
directed by Tasos Sagris
The «Transformation» of Franz Kafka, one of the literary masterpieces of the 20th century, directed by Tasos Sagris, after the rave reviews and the great success in Athens and Thessaloniki, continues for the 4th year in Contemporary Theatre, only for 16 midnight performances.
One morning, an employee, after ten years of repeating the same, fixed, daily schedule, suddenly finds himself unable to get out of bed and repeat the same, fixed movements. The world around him becomes hostile and he becomes the enemy of the world, a parasite. Father and Mother, Sister, Superior, all those who up to that moment had held him up as a role model, suddenly become enemies, and he, unable to cope with the routine and the roles they have all imposed on him, becomes their enemy.
Ο Franz Kafka is one of the greatest enigmas of the 20th century. Closed in himself he studied all possible selves, cut off from the world, he understood the world more deeply than the writers of his time, hidden from the eyes of men he looked all men in the eyes. Kafka an observer of collapse, a scriptwriter for silences and neuroses, an enemy of the totalitarian spirit, a photographer of a psycho-horror, an anatomist of power, stands on the side of the outcasts of this world, those who have been deprived of the present and all that remains is the nostalgia of the past and the hope hidden in a distant future.

«We are Patsy»

by Volker Ludwig
directed by Vassilis Koukalani
The comedy «We are Patsy» by Volker Ludwig is the new proposal
of Guild of the Laughing Guild which deals with one of the most important social issues of all time, gender equality and gender discrimination.
It is the story of a working mother of two children who struggles bravely through the difficulties of everyday life. The two children, Gina and Markos, are lively, open-minded, independent. Despite financial difficulties, there is a friendly, often cheerful tone in the home, mutual help is self-evident, the children are accepted as partners and are - girls and boys alike - equally responsible for the organisation and running of the household. A modern, progressive family...one might say.
Their microcosm is confused when one day a new «dad» arrives, who plays the master of the house and demands that everyone obey him. Of course, this new «daddy» seems to only take out on the house the anger and aggression that he himself has received in the workplace. Until one day the two little kids decide to rehearse a «rebellion» and run away from home...
The performance is addressed to children of age from 6 years old, in a simple, spontaneous and fun way.
