In the early 1930s, a simple young farmer named Charidimos Arvanitis enlisted in the Gendarmerie. Coming from a family with democratic roots, he served primarily to make a living.
From the early years of his service, he found himself serving under the Metaxas dictatorship, experiencing the Occupation and the Civil War—all of this in Athens, Piraeus, and other parts of Greece. During the Occupation, a great love haunts Charidimos’s life and causes him to see reality in a different light. He experiences events he could never have imagined.
Through the personal account of this ordinary police officer, the author—in a captivating style and at times with humor— paints a picture of the Greek reality of those dark years and captures the entire atmosphere of the era with clarity and without any fanaticism or bias.
All the events described in the book are true. The author traces the life of Charidimos Arvanitis right to the very end! Some names have been changed for obvious reasons. This is a fictionalized biography—more biography than fiction.
