We heard that too!
«When we see the pain in Azofstahl we remember Mesolonghi», the Greek Prime Minister shouted in his speech to Congress, knowing the apotheosis of the «senators». Most of them are certainly completely unaware not only of what exactly happened in the spring of 1826 in Messolonghi but also of its very existence. Besides, the various lobbies did not elect them on the basis of their historical knowledge, to vote according to their interests they elected them.
There is no need to repeat what the Azov battalion is, since neither they themselves nor their - formally - superiors in Ukraine nor their real leaders outside the country deny its character and its «manoeuvres«, but instead take pride in them. It is a disgrace that this name should coexist in the same sentence as the »free besieged' of Messolonghi.
For reasons of respect to the dead of the Exodus, let us see what happened in Messolonghi, on 10 April 1826, and let us consider what it has to do with those hidden in the basements of the steel factory in Mariupoli who surrendered, as their leaders said, «because they had no food and water.«
In Messolonghi, 3,600 warriors and 7,000 women and children were confined.
Difference one: the women and children stayed in Messolonghi by their own choice. They had many opportunities to leave, they did not. Nothing to do with the hostage-taking of civilians used as a shield but also as a «curb» for the propaganda of the NATO media.
Difference two: The 3,600 warriors were not confined to the burrows. They were fighting, they were going out, they were not experiencing military defeat.
Difference three: Those trapped in Messolonghi had no help from anyone, instead the troops besieging Messolonghi were supported with ammunition, food and information by the English, French and Austrians. Those trapped in Messolonghi were not even helped by the British-controlled government of Greece. It was not by chance that American admirals of the special forces, Canadian generals, British lieutenant-colonels...
Difference four: the defenders of Messolonghi also had no food and water, but they did not surrender. Instead, they attempted an exodus, the vast majority of them fell fighting. Of the 3,600 warriors fighting, about 1,500 reached Zygos. The rest were killed. Of the 7,000 women and children, very few were saved, thousands were captured and sold into slave markets. Prokes Osten, later Austrian ambassador to Greece, reports that two years after the Exodus, mid-Gypsy women were being sold in the slave markets of Nubia for «3 pungi»!
To make the shame of those who attempted this disgusting comparison even greater, a few scenes that followed: Along with Kioutachy and Ibrahim in the corpse-strewn Messolonghi, the consul of England, Philip James Green, and the Austrian abbot Don Macarelli, solemnly entered. This ... holy man, the representative of the «civilized West» in his report to his superior Moretti states: «The pairs of ears collected from the slain raiders are, in fact, 3,100.» On the «right side of history» and the abas! And, above all, the civilized one!
In this note we focused on the historical differences between the Messolonghi and the Azov Battalion. It would be disrespectful to the memory of the former to even discuss the obvious political and moral differences. We shall confine ourselves to the political conclusion: The bourgeois Greek class and its political representatives, the one that within the country sells nationalism, homeland and ancestors, is willing, in front of its transatlantic masters, to surrender even the «holy of holies». This is not the first time it has done so.
But here too we should note an important difference: In the past the relationship with the English or Americans was presented as «realism» And it was presented ....shyly! Today, it is shamelessly advertised as a feat to make Greece the most willing protectorate in Europe. A dangerous, very dangerous development for peace in our country!
«Frenchman's mind...Englishman's topi», they were fighting for Messolonghi, as the great Solomos wrote. The «civilized West» has been taking care of us ever since. And let us not forget: A few kilometers east of Messolonghi is Distomo, south Kalavryta, north Agrinio, west Kefalonia. The places that, 120 years later, experienced the atrocity of those who had as symbols anchored crosses and Black Suns, the same ones that their ideological descendants are waving today!
Shame and eternal storming to those who attempted this historic tomb raid!
