N. Manolakos: «Need to fill operational gaps in junior high schools and high schools in Piraeus and the islands»

The MP for Piraeus and Islands Nikolaos Manolakos, submitted on February 17, 2022, as part of parliamentary oversight, a question to the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs regarding the steps to be taken to fill the staffing vacancies faced by junior high and high schools in Piraeus and the islands

The text of the question is as follows:

Piraeus, February 17, 2022

QUESTION

To: The Minister of Education and Religious Affairs

Subject: «Filling Staff Vacancies in Schools Under the Piraeus Regional Directorate of Education»

Madam Minister,

I was recently notified by the Parents and Guardians Association of Mesagros Junior High School of the letter dated February 11, 2022 «Letter of Protest Regarding the Failure to Fill an Operational Gap», addressed to your Ministry, which expresses concern regarding an operational gap at the Mesagros Junior High School concerning the PE04 subject area. Specifically, the letter states that no teacher has yet been assigned to Mesagros Junior High School to teach Geography, Chemistry, and Biology, resulting in a shortfall of eight (8) teaching hours for these specific subjects, which cannot be covered by the teacher recently assigned to this school, as he specializes in a different subject area (PE03 Mathematics). .

In response to the above letter, I was informed of the existence of staffing vacancies at other schools within the Piraeus and Islands Regional Directorate of Education, specifically in the following subject areas: PE 01 Theology, PE05 French, PE06 English, PE07 German, PE08 Fine Arts, and PE11 Physical Education, resulting in a significant number of unfilled teaching hours, which—given that we are in the middle of the school year— pose a huge problem for students, especially those in their final years of high school, who, lacking the necessary preparation, are forced, in preparation for the Panhellenic Examinations, to fill these gaps by resorting to tutoring centers and private lessons, thereby placing a financial burden on the family budget.

In light of the above, we ask you, Mr. Minister:

  1. When does the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs intend to fill the staffing vacancies at Mesagros Junior High School and the other schools in the Piraeus Regional Education Directorate?;
  2. Does the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs intend to hire new professors to fill existing operational vacancies:
