October 2021: The second-coldest October of the decade
October 2021 was characterized by unusually low temperatures for the season and heavy rainfall across most of the country. Maximum temperatures on most days of the month were below the average for the past decade, according to records from 53 weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr.
The greatest deviations were recorded by weather stations in Macedonia, where, during the “Ballos” storm, temperatures were as much as 12°C below normal levels for this time of year. More specifically, in Florina, snowfall reached the outskirts of the city on October 15, and frost was recorded last week. The average maximum temperature at our weather station in Florina was 4 degrees below the 2010–2019 average, as was the case in Kilkis.
The map below shows the values of the deviations, which for Macedonia, Thrace, Western Greece, the Ionian Islands, Thessaly, Central Greece, and Crete were slightly higher (~0.3°C) than those of October 2010, the coldest October in the last decade. In the Cyclades, the Eastern Aegean islands, and the Dodecanese, temperatures were closer to the 2010–2019 average, running 1 degree lower.
