In a petition submitted on Monday, November 2, 2020, to the Minister of Merchant Marine, the New Democracy Member of Parliament for Piraeus A and the Islands, Nikolaos Manolakos, calls for the implementation of special subsidized ferry routes from Gythio to Kythira – Antikythira – Kissamos, in addition to the one weekly service already in operation, until the regular ferry on the Kythira – Neapoli, ‘PORFYROUSA,“ is repaired following the damage it sustained on October 28, 2020.
The report in detail.
Mr. Minister, I am sending you the press release from TRITTON FERRIES announcing that on the 28thη In October 2020, due to extreme weather conditions, damage was caused to their ferry, “PORFYROUSA,” which operates daily service on the Neapoli – Kythira, and twice a week on the subsidized route to the remote island of Antikythira, resulting in the vessel being taken out of service for a period of at least fifteen days, which is the estimated time required for repairs.
This unforeseen event is causing major problems in the daily lives of the residents of Kythira – Antikythira, in terms of food supply, commerce, accessibility, and safety, a situation exacerbated by the need to transport more passengers due to the olive harvest season. It also creates problems for the operation of the Municipality of Kythira regarding public and municipal projects currently underway, and the island’s civil protection is also put at risk, should the need arise.
We urge the government to take immediate action by approving the operation of additional subsidized ferry routes from Gythio to Kythira – Antikythira – Kissamos, in addition to the one weekly service already in operation, for as long as the ship PORFYROUSA remains out of service
Nikolaos Manolakos,
Member of the Parliament of Piraeus and Islands of the New Democracy (ND).
