Reportage on wind farms in the Aegean by German Television

ARD: The Aegean Sea is facing the biggest man-made change in its history.

Reportage in the Aegean from Germany's state channel - they recorded the discontent of residents on 3 Aegean islands, who oppose plans to install wind turbines.

The Aegean is facing the greatest man-made change in its history. This was the conclusion of a report by the German state television ARD, broadcast on 25 October.

In particular, the German journalists spoke to residents who are in danger of being uprooted from their islands, who expressed their fears in front of the camera that the entire relief and landscape of the Aegean may be permanently altered by wind farms.

The well-known German state channel ARD made a report on Sunday 25/10 in the show Weltspiegel about the huge wind “parks” planned to be built on small and large islands of the Aegean Sea, without prior information of the local communities, often not even at the level of local government. As part of the report, a team of ARD journalists visited the islands of Amorgos, Keenaros and Levitha.

It was pointed out that in Amorgos, where the maximum power consumption of the island corresponds to the power of 1.5 wind turbines, 73 wind turbines are planned, 150 meters high, which is more than twice the size of the Acropolis rock including the Parthenon.

According to ARD, Greek and foreign companies are trying to make profits from the wind in the Aegean, without caring about the impact on the environment and local communities. If all the planned projects are implemented on this scale, the Aegean Sea will no longer exist as we know it in a few years. Many islands will not be able to support themselves economically from tourism.

Applications for industrial-sized wind power plants have been submitted to the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) for almost all Greek islands. The Greek government's goal is to cover 35% of the country's energy needs from RES by 2030. Indeed, the country's Prime Minister, Mr Mitsotakis, recently stated that «Greece can become the battery of Europe».

However, after 20 years, when the life cycle of the wind turbines has ended, only their iron carcasses will remain and the beauty and natural wealth of Greece will be lost forever.
