Message from the Prime Minister of Australia: «Long live Greece!»

«Warm greetings to all those celebrating Greek Independence Day - the two hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the modern Greek state», Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says in a message.

«On this national day, I join you in celebrating this new chapter in the epic history of ancient Greece. For millennia Greece has given so much to the world - philosophy and democracy, science and architecture, arts, sports and culture. A record of achievement that has enriched the world. Greece is a nation committed to the freedoms of democracy and equality. These are the values and aspirations that bind Greece to its friends around the world,» the Australian Prime Minister said at the beginning of his message.

He then makes special reference to the Greeks of Australia. «Australia is blessed by the huge presence of the Greek Diaspora. Australians of Greek descent have contributed immensely to our nation, bringing energy and enthusiasm for a new life in a new place. From our major cities to our country towns. From milk bars to high end restaurants. On the screen to the newspapers. In boardrooms, in courtrooms and in parliaments. The men and women of Greek descent who call Australia their country lead the nation's progress with knowledge and courage. We share a history and a cultural heritage. We have stood by each other in war and sought the same freedoms and peace. Our ties of blood and family unite us. Australia is the most successful and interconnected multicultural country in the world. Our multicultural work is a celebration of humanity. It rests on the goodwill, sacrifice and resilience of generations. The Greek Diaspora is a precious part of that history,» says Scott Morrison.

He is also delighted to join the people of Greece and their families around the world in celebrating this milestone in the history of the Greek nation.

The Prime Minister of Australia closes his message with the phrase «Long live Greece!».

The video message of the Australian Prime Minister is posted on the Twitter account of the Australian Ambassador to Greece, Arthur Spyrou. «On this historic anniversary, Australia joins the celebrations of Greeks everywhere wholeheartedly!» the Australian ambassador noted.
