«The state must exhaust every possibility so that the life of a prisoner is not lost,» said Kostas Tzavaras, a member of the Southwestern Diocese of Elis, speaking to Kokkino and Nikos Xydakis. He said that the General Secretary of Anticriminal Policy Sophia Nikolaou explained in a statement that she sent on February 18 the documents requested by the Ombudsman since January «so that the prisoner can exercise his legal rights under the Penal Code», these documents that the lawyer of Dimitris Koufontina said yesterday that they have not been communicated.
«The question is why he is not appealing to the Court of Enforcement of Sentences to see what should apply,» Tzavaras said.
Indicative, however, is his answer when asked why the DG for Anticrime Policy delayed almost two months to send the relevant documents. «I don't know what the reasons are. I would like it to be done in a shorter time. I am interested if there is an injustice, that injustice should be corrected,» he clarified. He added that «the correction of injustice against prisoners under the Correctional Code is regulated by the Sentencing Court. I am interested in that. Otherwise if someone wants to instrumentalize life, I am not going along with it,» he said.
He even called on the Ombudsman to take the initiative and give his own opinion on the matter. Asked about the case that the DG of Anticriminal Policy has not given all the necessary documents, Kostas Tzavaras replied that «if she has not given them she is exposed» leaving open the possibility of political responsibility in such a case.
