An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck at 7:20 a.m. northeast of Leonidio.
The Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens announced that today, at 07:20 Greek time, the seismological network recorded a mild earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred 101 km southwest of Athens.
The epicenter of the earthquake is located in the sea 16 km northeast of Leonidio.
«We are monitoring the phenomenon, but it was far from land; there is no cause for concern,» Mr. Lekkas told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA).

The president of the OASP and professor of Dynamic Tectonics, Applied Geology, and Natural Disaster Management at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Efthymis Lekkas. «The earthquake occurred in an area that does not experience high seismic activity. It is, of course, adjacent to the Leonidio area, where there are major tectonic structures and faults, but we will have to see how the situation develops. So far, nothing out of the ordinary has been observed within the Argolic Gulf,», Mr. Lekkas told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), emphasizing that «we do not yet know if this is the main earthquake; it is too early to say.».
In addition, Mr. Lekkas emphasized that there have been no reports of damage so far, and added that the OASP’s Permanent Special Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and Seismic Risk Mitigation is not expected to meet at this time.
