April 21 appears to be a dark day for Kythira’s population trends, as the final results of the 2021 Population and Housing Census-Housing Census for 2021 regarding the country’s permanent population were published today, showing that Kythira’s population has decreased by 10% compared to 2011. More specifically, Kythira and Antikythira had a combined population of 3,644 residents, a decrease of 397 residents compared to 2011, when the islands had 4,041 residents.
As shown by the final census results, and as had already been indicated in the preliminary data, Kythira and Antikythira are the leaders in population decline among the inhabited islands of Greece. Below you can see the table showing the changes by municipal district and municipal community.

The Regional Unit of Piraeus also recorded a marginal decline of 2%, while the population of the Regional Unit of the Islands—which includes Kythira—declined by 6.2%.
More generally, a significant decline in population is observed in almost all regions of the country.
The total permanent population of Greece is 10,482,487 people, of whom 5,356,510 are women (51.1%) and 5,125,977 men (48.9%). Based on the new data, it appears that the total number of citizens has decreased by 3.1% compared to the 2011 census.
As for the country's regions, most of them are experiencing a decline in population, with very few exceptions.
