An important tourism development project for Kythera has entered the implementation phase, as the contract for the studies of the Tourist Boat Anchorage (Marina) in Piso Gialos of Kapsali was signed on 16 December 2024. The contract was signed by the President of the Municipal Port Fund and Deputy Mayor Mr. Dimitris Kalligeros and the representative of the contractor company “TRITON CONSULTING ENGINEERS S.R.O.”, which was the successful tenderer in an open electronic tender.
Budget and Financing
The total budget of the project amounts to 180.000,00 euros, with funding coming from the programme PHILODEMOS II. After the discount achieved during the tender, the final contract amount is 127.800,00 euro with VAT.
Timetable and study stages
The total duration for the completion of the studies is 12 months, with the project being developed in five stages:
•Fieldwork: Completion within two (2) months from the signing of the contract.
•Preliminary design of port projects: Submit within two (2) months of fieldwork approval.
•Environmental Impact Assessment & Ecological Assessment: Completion within four (4) months of approval of field work.
•Final Port Study: Submission within three (3) months of the approval of the Preliminary Design.
•Compilation of SAY - FAY and Tender Documents: Within fifteen (15) days from the approval of the Final Design.
The Mayor of Kythera, Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis, stressed the importance of the project, stating:
“Another major development project is getting underway on our island. A tourism development project that the local community has been waiting for decades. In 2005, a great opportunity was missed, as funding of 2.5 million euros was approved, but the project was not implemented. Today, with the cooperation of the Port Fund, we have secured funding for the studies, which will give us a mature dossier for licensing and seeking new funding to implement the project.”
The marina in Piso Gialos Kapsali is a development priority for Kythera, as it will enhance tourism, offer new possibilities for hosting tourist boats and upgrade the overall image of the island as a destination. With the completion of the studies, the Municipality of Kythera will have a complete and mature dossier, ready to apply for funding for the construction of the project.
