Turkey: Russian warships are blocked in the Bosporus Strait
Earlier, as was reported, the Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar he told the Sergei Shoigu's Russian counterpart, during their phone conversation today, that there must be immediate suspension the conflict in Ukraine over humanitarian reasons.
Turkey, a NATO ally that shares borders with Russia and Ukraine on the Black Sea, maintains good relations with both countries. Yesterday, Monday, Turkey called on all countries to refrain from sailing through its straits into the Black Sea, in accordance with the 1936 Montreux Convention, thereby restricting the passage of certain Russian warships.
Under the treaty, Ankara has the right to restrict passage through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles during a period of war.
The treaty allows it to restrict Russian warships heading toward the Black Sea, while exempting ships returning to their bases. At least four Russian ships are waiting to pass through the Bosporus Strait into the Mediterranean.
