Sending U.S. troops to Ukraine to prevent a possible Russian invasion «is not on the table,» U.S. President Joe Biden assured today.
Speaking to reporters as he was leaving the White House, Biden said he made it clear to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during their two-hour video call yesterday, that the economic consequences for Russia would be unprecedented if it invaded Ukraine, and that he was «certain that Putin got the message.».
According to Biden, the U.S. «will not unilaterally use force» against Russia in the event of an invasion of Ukraine.
Biden also said he hopes that by Friday there will be an announcement regarding high-level meetings with Russia and at least four major NATO countries so that «discuss Moscow’s concerns» and see if compromises could be reached to «cool tensions on the eastern front.».
The U.S. has a moral and legal obligation to defend its NATO allies if they come under attack, but that obligation does not extend to Ukraine, he added.
