Turkey has test-fired a short-range ballistic missile over the Black Sea on Tuesday, according to two sources familiar with the matter and cited by the Bloomberg.
Top secret
A mobile platform was used to launch the missile from an airfield near the port city of Rize at about 7 a.m. local time, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorised to comment. The missile flew 350 miles (561 km) and landed off the coast of the port of Sinope, they said.
The secret missile project called Tayfun, in the Turkish, has been ongoing for several years, people said without elaborating. Η Presidency of the Defence Industry, which oversees the development of locally made weapons, refused to disclose any information about the project.
Turkey received an advanced system S-400 missile defence system manufactured by Russia, a top NATO enemy, in 2019, two years after the Anchor signed an agreement with Moscow to buy the system in the hope that the cooperation could help it develop its own missile defence programme. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Turkey and banned it from working on and receiving its F-35 stealth aircraft Lockheed Martin in response.
