Stavridis: From attempted suicide to recognition, a bottle of ouzo away

A strong dose of alcohol was the dividing line between death and... immortality for the top comedian.

Among the Greek actors who have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness as masters of the comic genre—many use the term «sacred monsters»—is undoubtedly the Nikos Stavridis.

His unique facial expressions and characteristic laugh (which he could «freeze» at any moment) could be taught in acting classes. Combined with its vibrant presence and his boundless improvisational talent bestowed upon the most iconic… nose in Greek cinema a posthumous reputation that will be passed down from generation to generation for all time.

However, the path of the great Samioti An actor's path to fame—it certainly wasn't all roses. For several years, he had the status of an extra, ...he was on the sidelines, and directors mostly cast him in minor musical roles. He was known for his great talent as a singer—he was described in the industry as having a «tenor voice»—thanks to which he had entered the field in the first place.

As a child, Stavridis—the second child in a poor, large family—spent his childhood working at his father’s grocery store and occasionally singing in the church choir. He caught the acting bug early on, so at age 18 he moved to Athens to pursue his dream. Until then, his only experience with the field had been a few leading roles in school plays and his tours of Samos as a creator of shadow puppet theater performances. He also worked for a short while as an assistant projectionist at a movie theater, cultivating his love for 7η art.

When he arrived in Athens, Stavridis first had to make ends meet, so he took a job at a military supply warehouse in the Piraeus, to which he walked from the poor neighborhood of Athens where he lived. His job was to match the boots by size, and his meager daily wage was barely enough to get by.

He is considered his alter ego Vasilis Avlonitis, and for some people, in fact, comparisons for the top spot revolve exclusively around these two giants. What’s striking is that even though there was a small age difference between them (Aylonitis was six years older), each served as a model for the other; in fact, in his very first theatrical role, Stavridis played the shoeshine boy who polished Avlonitis’s shoes.

When Stavridis attended a play at the theater «Intense» Starring Avlonitis, the idea for a musical theater production was born. The next time he passed by the «Eden,» he heard the troupe rehearsing, and with the impulsiveness of his youth, he decided to «barge in» and ask the conductor to let him try out for a singing role.

Avlonitis and the Makridakis They approached him as he was getting ready to sing, apparently to… have a good laugh at the antics of the would-be «winner» of an impromptu talent show. But when Stavridis opened his mouth, As they sang in a «tenorale» voice, their desire to have fun vanished, as he himself has stated. Starting the very next day, Stavridis was a member of the musical production «Lovitura» (1929), albeit in the minor role of the shoe shiner mentioned above.

His career in the years that followed was a far cry from what he had dreamed of. Many recognized his talent, but their words were not backed up by action. In the cultural scene of the time, there didn’t seem to be any room for new talents. and Stavridis remained in obscurity, filled with rejection and bitterness. When the time finally came for his first leading role, it was the final blow to his morale. He starred alongside Koula Giouzeppe at the «Eden» Theater, but the production turned out to be a major box-office flop.

After that, Stavridis was a psychological wreck, and one night, his depression, combined with alcohol, drove him all the way to the Acropolis, with the intention of committing suicide by jumping off the sacred rock! For good luck, however, he also took a bottle of ouzo with him. By the time he made it to the top, he was completely drunk, and the extra alcohol in his blood acted as a «purifier.» Stavridis forgot why he had gone up to the Acropolis and returned home… having accomplished nothing!

The turning point in his professional career was the proposal from the early-era vendetta of that time, Anna Kalouta, to pull a stunt right next to her. «Are you kidding me, Ms. Kalouta?» Stavridis asked her in surprise. The perceptive Kalouta had seen in his… hooked nose and sly gaze the profile of a rising star, and of course she was being completely serious. The skit was a huge hit and it was the first step toward establishing Stavridis as a leading figure in Greek theater.

The rest is history. When cinema entered the picture in the 1950s (he made his debut in 1950 in Nikos Tsiforos’s *Come to Uncle’s*), Stavridis—already recognized as a leading figure in theater and revue—became a massive hit with Greek audiences.

In the end, it was a bottle of ouzo that would draw the line between death and… immortality.
