The Prime Minister’s proposal— Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during today’s Cabinet meeting. The Prime Minister announced the extension of the fuel subsidy and an emergency allowance for families, while launching a fierce attack on the new political moves by Alexis Tsipras and Maria Karystianou, as well as on PASOK.
Economy: Extension of the diesel subsidy and a one-time payment of 150 euros With the central message being the ongoing return of the budget surplus to society, Mr. Mitsotakis announced two targeted measures:
- Diesel Subsidy: The diesel fuel subsidy of 15 leptes per liter is being extended through the month of June. With this measure, the price is expected to remain 30 cents cheaper than it was last March.
- Support for Families: At the end of June, a one-time financial assistance payment of 150 euros will be made for each child.
As the Prime Minister emphasized, the government’s total measures to stem the energy crisis have already exceeded 800 million euros, and he emphasized that the strategy focuses both on providing income support during exceptional circumstances and on promoting structural changes.
A head-on attack on Tsipras, Karystianou, and PASOK
The Prime Minister was particularly scathing in his response to the upheavals in the political landscape, prompted by the announcements of the new parties led by Alexis Tsipras (who is presenting his party today) and Maria Karystianou.
He described the new situation as «Babel politics», noting that these are «new or returning protagonists wearing a different mask,» while their only common ground is their empty criticism of the government. He even noted that the so-called institutional forces are losing their credibility.
The gunfire did not spare the PASOK, who was heavily criticized for his refusal to vote in favor of renewing Yannis Stournaras’s term at the Bank of Greece. Mr. Mitsotakis pointed out that Mr. Stournaras enjoys international recognition, played a decisive role in keeping the country in the eurozone, and was targeted in the «Novartis scandal.».
«No» to European Cuts – All Eyes on the Greek Presidency
On the European front, Kyriakos Mitsotakis drew clear «red lines,» speaking for the majority of member states. He stated categorically that Greece will not accept:
- Funding cuts from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
- Cuts to cohesion funding.
- Redistributions that will exacerbate inequalities among member states.
He called for flexibility and simplification of funding rules, announcing that these issues would be at the heart of Greece’s upcoming presidency of the European Union, with the ultimate goal of continuously attracting high-quality investments and narrowing the gap with Europe.
A Message of Stability from Cyprus
In closing his remarks, the Prime Minister briefly touched on the results of the elections in Cyprus, interpreting them as a clear message from the voters. As he stated, «citizens understand the importance of stability and certainty amid uncertainty.».
