Maria Callas's original piano, a gift from Aristotle Onassis to her, which was placed on the yacht «Christina» for her to do her practical exercises when they were travelling, will accompany Monica Bellucci's long-awaited performances in Greece, with the work «Maria Callas: letters and memories» on 21, 22 and 23 September 2021 at the Herodesion.
The donation of the 1952 Baby Grand Steinway & Sons model S piano, which adorns the Onassis Library, is a highly symbolic gesture by the Onassis Foundation, which will offer a thrill to Greek audiences who will watch the ethereal Italian star perform letters and memories of Maria Callas on the stage of the Herodion, under the baton of Tom Wolf.
The performance is based on Tom Wolf's book of the same name, but also on his recent film «Maria by Callas», in which he collected more than 350 unpublished letters written by Callas during 30 years (1946-1977).The book is also published in Greece by Patakis Publications, translated by Andreas Pappas.
Monica Bellucci is accompanied by the sounds of the Camerata Orchestra of the Friends of Music, under the direction of the leading Greek conductor, George Petrou, who will play Massenet's “Elegy” on the historic piano in the finale.
The performance is presented with Greek subtitles.
The cultural organization «Lykofos» would like to thank the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Library for the kind donation of the 1952 Baby Grand Steinway & Sons model S piano, which will be used in the performance.
