By the September 3 continues at Zeidoro, in Kapsali, George Tzannes' exhibition titled «Landscape with Cypress Trees», with the cypress tree at the center of a visual interpretation of the Kythira landscape.
The artist approaches the cypress not merely as a characteristic feature of Kythira’s natural landscape, but as a symbol. He contrasts it with the olive tree and, drawing on ancient Greek mythology, links the two trees to Athena, Aphrodite, and Apollo.
«If the olive tree, a gift from Athena, is the matriarch of the Kythirian landscape, beloved by Aphrodite, then the cypress is the patriarch,» notes George Tzannes. In his view, the cypress’s vertical form becomes a natural pillar pointing toward the sky and «reaching all the way to Apollo’s solar realm.».
The exhibition had opened on August 3 and ends on September 3, giving the public in Kythira a few more days to explore this particular collection of works.
