Conclusions from the Online Discussion on March 6, 2021
Dear friends and fellow citizens
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your participation in the discussion on the development of Kythira, for your contributions to the live discussion, your comments, and your participation as viewers. It’s also important to note that the recording of the discussion continues to attract interest, with nearly 3,000 (!) views so far. Please help spread the word!
As we mentioned at the end, we’ll summarize the key messages that came up and our thoughts on the next steps
A. Key Messages
1. There is general agreement on the need to formulate a development plan based on the proposed priorities. There was particular agreement on the need for development in Kythira (and Antikythira) to be sustainable, equitable for all, and respectful of—and promoting—our natural, cultural, and social environment.
2. The initial general approach must be refined along specific lines so that action plans can be developed
3. There was strong agreement on the need for cooperation among all those interested in the progress of our islands. The things that unite all Tsirigotes—our shared concerns and our desire for progress and prosperity on our islands—must be translated into productive action.
4. Finally, the need was expressed to systematize future initiatives so that even more people can participate in and contribute to the development of proposals and support their implementation. Beyond the obvious role of the island’s institutional bodies (Municipality, Local Communities, Associations, Brotherhood, Federation, KIPA, etc.), it is important to give those who wish to contribute in a practical way the opportunity and a platform to do so
B. Next Steps
Based on the above and the feedback we received, the next steps we will attempt to take are
1. Organizing thematic discussions, with targeted preparation so that the conclusions can be translated into action. In this context, we will seek to collaborate with our compatriots, institutional representatives, and individual compatriots who have already expressed their intention to coordinate such actions.
The areas we are considering for the future are (not necessarily in any particular order):
- • Primary Sector/Agricultural Economy (action already underway on this issue)
- • An Energy and Climate Plan (climate change and energy initiatives in Kythira)
- • Tourism development and related activities and infrastructure, in conjunction with cultural activities
- • Infrastructure, with an initial discussion focused on water management and, more specifically, issues related to sewerage and water supply
- • Other topics to be determined at a later date (e.g., manufacturing, etc.)
2. Creation of a «virtual library» (microsite) where thoughts, opinions, and initiatives regarding the development of Kythira will be posted and published, and
Antikythira. Our goal is to gather ideas in one place where anyone interested can view them and possibly put them to use
3. An effort by Kythira’s institutions to adopt such a plan and guidelines in their operations, particularly by the Municipality and the Committee on Local Property (EEPKA), so that they may take the lead in the areas falling under their jurisdiction.
Throughout this effort, we will seek to involve as many of our fellow countrymen as possible.
