New service from the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr - Flammability mapping of dead forest fuel

In recent decades, our country has been continuously affected by forest fires of great intensity and extent, which have particularly negative consequences, the most important of which are human losses and the disturbance of natural ecosystems.

One of the most important factors affecting the intensity and overall fire behaviour is the moisture content of dead fuel (e.g. needles, leaves, branches), referred to in the international literature as Dead Fuel Moisture Content (DFMC). Knowledge of the moisture content of this category of forest fuel allows the determination of the degree of forest flammability and plays an important role in fire planning and forest fire suppression.

In the framework of the CLIMPACT project, a service for mapping the daily moisture content of fine dead fuel was created, whose products can be used operationally for the timely and effective response to fire incidents (https://meteo.gr/fire/fuelmoisture.cfm). This service uses observations from the EAA's network of automatic weather stations / meteo.gr in combination with sophisticated moisture calculation models. The produced cartographic products cover the entire Greek territory and are updated on a daily basis. The following example shows a daily dead fuel moisture map for 21 September 2021 (Map).

The cartographic products of the daily moisture content of dead fuel are expected to cover another important gap that existed until now in our country, which concerned the providing geographical information regarding the flammability limits of the dead fine fuel. In addition, together with the very high resolution model (IRIS), the measurements of its dense network of meteorological stations and the processed satellite images, the National Observatory of Athens and in particular the meteo.gr unit, has in recent years developed a comprehensive set of tools for monitoring and operational planning of forest fire response.
