In a press release issued to the local media, the Kythira Foundation for Culture and Development, calls on Tsirigoians to assist in the continuation of efforts to stop the unregulated, uncontrolled and damaging to the «natural and man-made environment of the island», installation of wind turbines.

The legal fight for the rescue of Kythera continues!
The risk of industrialization is getting closer and closer, with irreversible effects on the natural and man-made environment of our island. Specifically:
On 26-8-2021, three new certificates were posted on Transparency, adding to the four older ones, which were issued by the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) in early 2020.Thus, a total of 282MW have been licensed for Kythera, corresponding to 141 standard wind turbines and one more application for a wind turbine at the foothills of Ai Giorgis in Paleopolis is pending. It is worth noting that the island's daily electricity needs are 4MW.
The three new production licenses were granted in the areas of Cordellides and Xerocampia in the northern part of the island, within the NATOURA 2000 area and in the area of Finikies, again, where a national record has been set with the licensing of wind turbines with a blade diameter of 155 meters and a total height of 250 meters!
The permitting process for industrial-scale renewable energy projects involves three stages:
- The company's application to R.A.E.
- Producer's certificate to the company from P.A.E.
- Permission to install the industrial plant from the Ministry or the Decentralized Administration depending on its size. In the case of Kythera, permits are issued by the Decentralised Administration
For the first four producer attestations, two (2) of the «Kopelouzos Group» in the areas of Mermigaris and Finikies and two (2) of «Hellactor Group» in the areas of Krotiri-Kefalovouni-Pirgos (between Mylopotamos and Aroniadika) and Krotiri-Kefalakia (above Agia Pelagia), applications for revision were made by citizens, associations and clubs of the island in R.A.E., which were rejected and the applications for annulment filed on 17-9-2021 at the Athens Administrative Court of Appeal will now be heard. In case the applications for annulment are rejected, appeals will be made which will be heard by the highest court of annulment in the country, the Council of State (Council of State (CoE). The costs for these eight legal actions so far (four applications for review in the R.A.E. and four applications for annulment in the Administrative Court of Appeal of Athens) have been covered by individuals, associations and clubs on the island).
For the three new producer certificates of interest to the company «TERNA S.A.», the K.I.P.A., using the money collected in the account announced, will proceed to applications for annulment of those acts to the P.A.E. In these appeals it would be good to re-engage citizens, clubs and associations of the island without the need for immediate payment of a sum of money.. However, as part of the money collected to date will be used, there will be a need for new depositions to allow this long-running legal battle to continue.

We call upon the citizens and the associations of the island, on the one hand, to appeal, together with the K.I.P.A., against the actions of the R.A.E. and on the other hand, to contribute, as much as they can, financially by depositing in the following Bank Account of the K.I.P.A., so that it can respond to the long legal struggles for the rescue of the island from its industrialization.
