The anchor
Man - fooled into daring - once managed to float in the waters of the vast sea, riding on primitive rafts. And then he was faced with an unforgiving reality. On the contrary, it was often turbulent, threatening to sink anything that floated. From that distant time in human history, a multitude of shipwrecks have dragged people to the bottom, right up to our own time.
So, my Christians, is the life of men: daily dangers, whether from natural causes or from our errors and sins, threaten to destroy a peaceful course. But more dangerous are the spiritual shocks...
Many times we reach a point of despair and despair. Our faith in Christ is shaken and we are in danger of sinking to the bottom of his absence. An «absence» that we have caused by forgetting Him, like Peter when he was sinking in the lake...
Today's Apostolic reading gives exactly the assurance we need in difficult times.
It speaks of the certainty of the promise. A promise given to us by our Creator and which cannot be broken. This promise the Apostle likens it to anchor of hope. He is the same one who characterized hope in our Lord, not as a possibility of salvation, but as a certainty.
What ship, what captain, what traveller would not want the anchor of the ship to save it from the storm and the shipwreck?;
In a few days, my brothers and sisters, we will celebrate Easter. And we will sing «O divine, O friend, O voice of Thy sweetness, with me I proclaim thee without fail. For ever and ever, O Christ, let us believers, who possess the anchor of hope, rejoice.
How sweet and loving is Your Divine voice! For You have promised to be with us until the end of time, Christ. And holding tightly to this promise of Thy, Thy faithful, true anchor of hope, we are filled with rejoicing!.
