Kythera High School: the permanent exhibition of archival photographic material was inaugurated

Photo exhibition for the 100 years since the founding of the school

The opening of the permanent exhibition of archival-photographic material on the 100 years of operation and contribution of our High School was successfully held on Monday 30 January, the day when the school community celebrates the memory of the Three Patrons.

The exhibition was organised in the framework of a cultural programme entitled «Kythera High School: 1921-2021: one hundred years of contribution to Kythera». The project was led by the Director of the Gymnasium Stavroula Fatsea (PE05) and the teachers Lourantos Georgios (PE01) and Miligaki Maria (PE02).

The photographs, which cover the period of one hundred years of operation of our high school, starting from the 1920s-1930s and ending with the last one of 2010-2020, come from the school's archive, from the family archives of our students, from the archive of the renowned photographer Valerios Kalokairinou and of course from the precious and rich collection of our beloved, Mrs. Eleni Charos-Koronaiou.

In this modest and simple event, His Eminence, Metropolitan Seraphim honoured us with his presence and blessed the Vasilopita of our school.

Also present were the Mayor of Kythera, Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis, the Deputy Mayor and President of the Secondary Education School Committee, Mr. Mr. Georgios Kominos, the President of the Property of Kythera and Antikythera, Mr. Evangelos Venardos, the Governor of the Kythera Hospital, Mr. Georgios Megalokonomos, the President of the Parents and Guardians Association, Fr. Ioannis Papandropoulos, the retired Head of the Gymnasium, Mrs. Eleni Harou-Koronaiou, the former Prefect of Kythera and pioneer in the construction of the building that now houses the Gymnasium, Mr. Emmanuel Kasimatis, the Head of the Post Office, Mrs. Irini Pastou-Kasimatis and many old students of our school.

The Director of the Gymnasium expressed her warm thanks to the Municipality of Kythera for its financial support and general support and to all those who kindly provided photographs for the realization of this exhibition. Finally, he also expressed his gratitude to the charismatic and talented former student of our school, Kostis Kontoleonta, who selflessly helped in the placement of the photographs in the exhibition spaces.

This commemorative photographic record caused a shiver of emotion among the attendees, brought back memories from the distant and near past and was an occasion for a review of the course of our school and the important role it has played in the intellectual development of our island.

You can see snapshots in the short video created by the Director Stavroula Facea using the photos and video recording made by the teacher Evdokia Chrysovergi during the event
