Lakis Gavalas’s «farewell» to Giorgos Mazonakis held special symbolic meaning. The well-known designer chose to leave a bouquet of Kythira's seabream, linking the island’s eternal flower with the memory of the artist.
«A bouquet of Sempreviva (evergreen), a rare species of flower from Kythira, is my gift placed on the marble tomb of the unforgettable Giorgos Mazonakis,» Lakis Gavalas noted in his post.

The choice was by no means random. The sempreviva—the flower that remains unchanged even when dried—is inextricably linked to Kythira, and its name means «always alive.» Thus, the Kythirian flower became a simple yet deeply symbolic final gift to the popular singer.
In the same post, Lakis Gavalas also referred to the investigation into the circumstances of Mazonakis’s death, calling for those responsible to be held accountable wherever they are found and directing his criticism at practices he describes as «paramedical.» At the same time, he urged the public to be wary of methods that promise well-being and longevity.
Giorgos Mazonakis’s grave has been flooded in recent days with flowers and personal messages from people rushing to say goodbye to the artist. Among them now are the “semprevives” from Kythira—a flower that, like its name, symbolizes what remains. always alive.
