From 00:01 at dawn to 12 midnight, the ferries departing only from the port of Piraeus will remain tied up today, due to a 24-hour continental strike declared by seafarers' unions.
The seafarers' unions of the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Navy Engineers (PEMEN), the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Navy Seamen (PENEN), the Panhellenic Union of Chief Mariner's Seamen (PEATHEN), the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Navy Engine Crewmen (O STEFENSON) and the Panhellenic Union of Towing Crewmen of Lifeboats demand the withdrawal of the revised Code of Private Maritime Law, renewal and implementation of the Collective Labour Agreements, with increases in wages.
It is noted that the mobilization of the crews of the Towing Lifeboats is nationwide.
The seafarers' unions will hold a meeting at 10 am at the port of Piraeus opposite the power station. The Piraeus Labour Centre expresses its solidarity with today's mobilisation of the workers in Piraeus in a statement.
Twenty-four-hour strike mobilization today by the Metalworkers' Union, the Shipbuilders' Union and the dockworkers' Union of Container Handling Workers at the Piraeus Docks (ENEDEP) at the Piraeus Container Terminal.
The ENEDEP dockworkers' union stresses that on this day there will be no container handling at piers II and III, while it calls for the inclusion of all workers in heavy and unhealthy occupations, the implementation of the Collective Labour Agreement for all dockworkers and measures for Health and Safety.
The dockworkers at 12:00 noon will hold a memorial service and event in memory of his colleague Dimitris Dagkli at the Piraeus Container Terminal SEP, in the place where he died tragically and where his photograph is located.
A joint press conference was held yesterday at the port of Piraeus by the dockers' union ENEDEP, the metal union in the shipbuilding and repair zone and representatives of seafarers' unions.
The president of the Union of Container Handling Workers at the Piraeus piers, Markos Bekris, said that at piers II and III, with the responsibility of all governments and employers, the legislation is not implemented so that workers are insured in heavy and unhealthy professions.
Already, he added, since 2012 the legislation from the National Social Security Board and the Social Security Council explains that the dockworkers' sector is included in the legislation in order to be insured in accordance with the regulation on the BAA. Their non-implementation means 700 workers are under-insured, with a direct consequence for older colleagues instead of 62 years to retire at 67, he added.
He also mentioned that there have been too many accidents at work in the port in recent years, adding that some employees work at the port and are out of contract.
