Biography

Panagiotis Margaris is a Greek guitarist and composer. He was born on 29 October 1971 in Athens and studied classical guitar and higher theory. In June 2000 he was awarded the diploma of classical guitar with unanimous distinction and the first prize for outstanding performance. He started performing in concerts in 1990 and since then until today he has made about 1700 appearances all over Greece, Europe, America and Africa.

He has recorded 15 personal albums, most of which reached the top 10 of the official Greek IFPI charts. The total sales of his recordings have exceeded 1.000.000 copies worldwide. Especially the album he recorded in 2012, entitled “Rock Of My Soul”, is considered groundbreaking and innovative, as he combined classical guitar with Rock music through his covers. In 2005 and 2006 he was awarded the Arion music awards (Best Instrumental Album of Greece) for the CDs “Cafe de l’ art - Cinema” and “Cafe de l’ art - Tsitsanis - Vamvakaris” respectively.

He has collaborated with great artists such as: Mikis Theodorakis, Al Di Meola, Lavrentis Mahairitas, Stamatis Kraounakis, Eleni Vitali, Christos Leontis, Marios Fragoulis, Michalis Hatzigiannis etc.

On the occasion of the recording “Panagiotis Margaris interprets Mikis Theodorakis”, the most important composer of the modern history of Greece Mikis Theodorakis wrote about Panagiotis Margararis: “My dear Panagiotis, I have heard the final version of your work and I hasten to thank and congratulate you. You fully respected my work and proceeded with imagination and ingenuity, elevating the guitar to a leading instrument of musical expression, taking advantage of all its rich elements that brought out all aspects of my music. I greet you with love, Mikis Theodorakis’

Panagiotis Margaris teaches classical guitar in Athens. Many notable guitarists have graduated from his class.

In July 2017 he was awarded by UNESCO for his contribution to culture.
