In a public letter to the Mayor of Kythera, the President of the Municipal Community of Potamos, Takis Alevisopoulos, denounces the complete absence of institutional cooperation, lack of information and administrative neglect by the Municipal Authority.
Mr. Alevisopoulos points out that he is not provided with the necessary tools to carry out his work, while he claims that there has been no response to requests and decisions of the community. He asks for immediate cleaning workers, activation of a fixed advance and an update on the actions of the municipality on critical projects.
Finally, he stresses that silence is not a solution and calls on the Municipal Authority to respect institutions, people and common sense. The full text of the letter below:
Need for Direct Cooperation & Institutional Respect
Dear Mr. Mayor,
As President of the Municipal Community of Potamos - the largest community on the island - I feel the need to write to you, as my verbal and electronic appeals are not getting any response whatsoever.
Despite my responsibility to the residents, the Municipality's administration does not provide me with even the minimum resources and tools necessary to carry out my work. I am forced to cover needs from my personal expenses in order to solve daily problems of my fellow residents. This is neither normal nor institutionally acceptable.
I have repeatedly asked you to inform me in good time of the arrival of crews bringing tarmac or concrete, so that I can accurately indicate priority points. Instead, you are informed or accompanied by citizens who, no matter how well-intentioned, do not know the big picture and the needs of the community as I, the institutional representative of the residents, do.
For every issue that I communicate to you by phone or email, I observe a practice of “ping-pong” of responsibilities between the deputy mayor and the technical service. The result is stagnation.
The Municipal Community of Potamos, responsibly and in a timely manner, through a people's meeting, decided on four important projects:
1. River basin plan
2. Agia Pelagia redevelopment
3. Potamos and Agia Pelagia wastewater treatment
4. Create parking and access to the River
Although our requests have been documented and sent repeatedly, we have not received any formal response. Furthermore, we were surprised to find that the President of the City Council, Mr. Kapsalis, removed the issue from the agenda of the accountability meeting, without informing us or justifying the decision.
Regarding the damage to infrastructure and networks, there is no information on your actions, so I am unable to give answers to my fellow citizens who are reasonably asking for information.
In addition, I am immediately requesting cleaners for the areas of Potamos and Agia Pelagia, which are large and require constant care.
I also call for the activation of the fixed advance, which will free our hands to solve small but urgent issues.
Finally, I call on you to better organise the administrative functioning of the Municipality so that there is continuous and responsible information for citizens. It is their right. If you have decided to bypass the representatives of communities that are not to your liking, at least do it properly, there are some people who live there who voted for you and are not to blame for anything
I call on you to respect institutions, persons and - above all - common sense.
