The Kythera Municipal Council adopted a resolution to address the problems in the island's schools, during its meeting on October 8, 2024. The resolution was issued in response to the significant shortages of teaching staff at the Kythera High School and Kythera Secondary School and the mergers of departments, which have created serious problems in the quality of education.
With deep concern, the City Council expresses the need for:
- Immediate filling of vacancies with permanent teacher appointments.
- Repeal of decisions to merge classes that increase the number of students per class beyond the prescribed limits.
- Restoration of the compulsory three-year appointment of teachers in hard-to-reach areas.
The Council stresses that education is a right for all and calls for improved conditions in schools, especially in remote and problematic areas such as Kythera. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the Municipal Council with decision number 80/2024
