Stamatina Varda, the municipal councilor from Kythira who received the most votes, although she does not usually make public statements, has explained the reasons why she chose to abstain from the last City Council meeting on August 8, 2024. Read below:
«History is written by those who are here,” they told us, accusing us of not attending today’s City Council meeting.
History isn’t written by those who are here today; the history of our municipality will be written by those who work, those who stay awake so we have water, those who bear the entire burden on their shoulders and, in addition to their exhaustion, must also face the opposition’s attacks.
I would like to explain why I was unable to attend today’s City Council meeting:
1. A detailed briefing had been provided a week earlier to the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor for Water Supply, and the Head of Technical Services, people whom I respect and trust completely for their work and their professionalism over the years.
2. Mr. Souris did not submit any well-thought-out proposals in his presentation, only general opinions. And in the City Council, we do not vote on opinions but on comprehensive and well-documented proposals.
3. Finally, I did not attend as a sign of protest against the way the opposition is exploiting the issue of water shortages for petty political purposes.
I want to tell my colleagues in the opposition that the Board of Directors’ chamber is not a coffee shop, nor is it our home, nor is it Moscow’s Red Square. If they cannot figure this out on their own, the Rules of Procedure and the President have the legal means to help them.
Thank you
Stamatina Varda
