Kythera: Cypriots celebrate the memory of Agia Elesa

Today, August 1st, Kythera celebrates with great reverence the memory of Saint Elesa, the patron saint and protector of the island. Saint Elesa, who lived in the 4th century AD, is an important religious symbol for the inhabitants of Kythera, as her sacrifice and faith embody the ideals of Christian faith and love.

The main event of the day takes place at the Holy Church of Agia Elesa in the monastery of the same name, which is located in an idyllic location overlooking the endless blue of the Ionian Sea. A large number of believers, locals and visitors, gather every year to honour the memory of the Saint with religious devotion and worship ceremonies.

The day begins with a Divine Liturgy, followed by a procession of the icon of the Saint, which ends in the courtyard of the monastery, where those present enjoy local treats and participate in cultural events.

The feast of Saint Elesa is a special day for the island, which strengthens the spirituality and solidarity of the inhabitants, while attracting visitors who wish to experience this authentic religious experience.
