The number of rapes of women in Brazil increased by 3.7% in 2021 compared to the previous year, with 56,098 such cases recorded across the country, or in other words one every ten minutes, reveals a report released yesterday Monday.
The largest country in Latin America also recorded 1,319 femicide last year, in other words, was murdered every seven hours; the number of such cases was down by 2.7% compared to 2020, according to the report by the non-governmental organisation Forum for Public Safety, released on the eve of International Women's Day.
«These data show the need to urgently develop policies of care, prevention and repression in the face of violence against women in Brazil,» Samira Bueno, the NGO's director, concluded, according to a press release accompanying the report.
«Despite a slight decrease in the number of femicides, the numbers remain very high,» she stressed. The rate of femicide is at the level of 1.22 per 100,000 women.
The report, based on complaints made at police stations, only deals with the reported rapes, which means that it reveals only part of them.
It also records that the number of femicides increased dramatically from February to May 2020, when the tightest restrictive measures were imposed in Brazil to halt the spread of the new coronavirus pandemic.
