The message of George Papandreou:
«We need a new change for the citizens, for the country. That's why the Democratic Party needs to become great again, to join the other democratic forces in Europe and the world that are coming back strongly.
I decided to run for the leadership of the Movement. And I will contribute with all my strength to make our party great and strong again; a leading player in developments, a catalyst for the formation of a progressive proposal for governance. A party capable of responding effectively to conservation.
I call on everyone, all democrats and progressive citizens, to turn this process into a celebration, a celebration of democracy, a celebration of participation.
I have informed our president, Fofi Gennimata, and the relevant committee of my decision.»
According to CNN Greece, a woman, a former MP, member of the Central Committee and direct collaborator of the outgoing president, Fofi Gennimata, is collecting signatures from the members of the Central Committee, so that by Thursday, when the deadline for submitting nominations expires, she can submit them in accordance with the party's statutes.
Among the signatures that have been collected are former members of the Democratic Party of Greece who have joined the Movement for Change.
According to the decisions taken, to be a candidate, one has to collect 5,000 signatures of members or 15% of the party's Central Committee members. This means that Mr Papandreou, wanting not to divide the PASOK and KINAL base, is addressing the members of the Central Committee of which he believes a large number will declare support for him.
