The area south of Skala toward Leimonas was visited yesterday, Sunday, March 21, by the his member of parliament SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance Stavros Arachovitis in order to get a firsthand look at the damage caused by the recent frost to the orange trees.
The damage caused is evident both to the naked eye—in the top and northern foliage—and when the oranges are cut open. Signs of dehydration are already visible in the oranges.
Agronomists—both contract and permanent—need to be hired immediately to assess the extent of the damage to this year’s crop. In addition, the KOE program needs to be activated to assess the lost production that will be incurred starting next year due to the destruction of the new fruit-bearing vegetation.
