The «green» light for the start of construction and operation of three desalination plants on Kythira was given by the Region of Attica following the signing of the relevant contract by Regional Governor G. Patoulis and the island’s mayor, E. Charchalakis.
The projects to be constructed with funding from the Region amounting to 1.7 million euros, these projects concern the the supply of three portable seawater desalination units, each with a capacity of 300 cubic meters per day, to provide, on a 24-hour basis, water suitable for drinking to the residents and visitors of the island of Kythira.
Specifically, the portable desalination units are to be installed in the settlements of Agia Pelagia (two units) and Diakofti (one unit), on appropriately prepared municipal sites that have been selected for this purpose.
On the occasion of the signing of the relevant contract, the Regional Governor of Attica noted the following:
«We are ensuring a supply of drinking water for the residents and visitors of Kythira through a landmark project that will have a significant environmental impact and improve their quality of life.”. We are making full use of all the financial tools at our disposal to promote equitable development across all municipalities in Attica. Our goal is for citizens living in remote areas, on isolated islands such as Kythira, to feel that we are actively standing by them. Through infrastructure projects, we are supporting Kythira with the aim of fostering its development, as well as highlighting its beauty and historical significance.».
