158 years since the Union of the Ionian Islands (photojournalism by Adeline)

The festivities in Chora took place with due pomp today, 21 May, on the occasion of the celebration of the 158th anniversary of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Mother Greece.

 

According to the program, the traditional praise was celebrated at the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Crucifixion of Chora, presided by His Eminence, Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythera-Antikythera, in the absence of the Mayor of Kythera, Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis, who is in his hometown, Antikythera.

The Festive Events took place in the presence of the President of the Municipal Council Mr.Emmanuel Stathis, the Deputy Mayors Mr.Georgios Kominos, Mr.Ioannis Katsanevakis, Mr.Kostas Kapsalis, the President of the Property of Kythera and Antikythera Mr.Evangelos Venardos and representatives of the Municipal Groups. Also present were the Commander of the Naval Observatory of Kythira (military commander), Commander Mr. Emmanuel Ablianitis PN, the Head of TACAN Kythira, Chief Engineer Mr.Nikolaos Serrefas, the Commander of TACAN of Kythera, Lieutenant A' Mr. Antonios Triantafyllos Pilikos, the Commander of L/T Kythera, Lieutenant Niki Giannakopoulou, the Head of P/K Kythera, Captain Spyridon Fountoulakis. Then a memorial service was held at Stai Square and a wreath laying ceremony at the Fallen Soldiers' Memorial in the square.
The first to lay a wreath was the Deputy Mayor Mr.Georgios Kominos, followed by the President of the Domestic Property Mr.Evangelos Venardos, the Representatives of the Security Corps and the Military Authorities of the place, the Representative of the Association of the Union of Eptanisians of Greece Mr.Emmanuel Kasimatis and the Representative of the School Students. This was followed by a minute of silence and the playing of the National Anthem by the Potamos Philharmonic Orchestra, courtesy of its Director Mr. Panagiotis Leftheris. Then the solemn speech of the day was delivered by the historian- philologist Mrs. Eleni Charou and followed by traditional dances by the students of the schools. The events ended with the student parade, which was applauded by the assembled people. Honor and glory to all those who gave their blood for the highest good of freedom and union with Greece.
